Black-Eyed Kids in Kansas

It was warm for a December afternoon in Hutchinson, Kan., when Katie came home from work in 2008. Katie’s ride dropped her off across from her duplex, and as she stood in the street, her ride moving slowly away, she knew something wasn’t right.

“I noticed two boys standing in my driveway,” she said. “One had longer dark hair and the other had his hood up so I couldn't see him very well.”

The teenagers, about 15 or 16 years old, seemed to be watching her – Katie felt they were waiting for her. She steeled herself and walked nervously across the road toward her porch. The boys had lurked around her neighborhood for months, but they’d never been so bold as to stand this close to her home.

“I had seen them before, lingering in the yard, but they always left before I got out of my ride's car,” Katie said. “I had seen them late at night as well standing across the street when I would go outside to have an occasional late-night cigarette.”

But, although pangs of unease told her to run, their boldness angered her. She stopped and asked them why they were on her property.

“They told me they needed to use a phone and that the neighbors would not let them in,” she said. “That was when I noticed their eyes – they were coal black. Just black. No white and not even a hint of iris or pupil.”

Fear shot through her, but as evenly as she could, Katie told them she didn’t have a telephone. Katie walked up her porch steps and began to unlock her door when the boy in the hood spoke.

“He asked if they could come in for a glass of water,” she said. “I turned to look at them again thinking maybe my mind was playing tricks. But no, when I turned and looked into their eyes they were pitch black as the first time.”

These children with dead, black eyes had spoken softly to her, emotion and vocal inflection absent from their words. As she looked at these boys, whose long hair and hooded sweatshirts she felt hid more than skin, she knew she had to get away.

“I felt panicked and fearful but also very vulnerable and cold,” she said. “It was like I wanted to let them in but I knew there was evil present. I had felt uneasy before seeing their eyes but now it all came out.”

Then one boy said something that turned her fear into complete terror.

“The hooded one then told me they couldn't come in unless I told them it was OK and that they hoped I would because they were thirsty,” Katie said. “I opened my door and darted inside. At this point I shut the door and locked it.”

She dropped onto the couch, her breaths coming in short, heavy gasps, when something tapped on the window behind her head.

“One of the boys stood there staring through the glass,” Katie said. “I remember his words very clearly; ‘just let us in, miss. We aren't dangerous, we don't have anything to hurt you with.’ I was beyond frightened at this point.”

Katie jumped off the couch and ran through the duplex, checking doors and windows to make sure they were locked.

“I did wonder if they really couldn't come in unless invited but I didn't want to find out,” she said. “I sat in the living room silently waiting for a sign that they had gone.”

When her boyfriend came home a short time later, the black-eyed teens were still at the house.

“(He) asked if I knew who the two boys outside were and I said ‘no,’” Katie said. “He told me they had been standing in the driveway when he pulled up but walked away when he stepped out of the car.”

He didn’t notice the boys’ eyes, but “they gave him a strange feeling.”

Katie later asked her neighbors if the black-eyed children had asked to use their telephone like they had claimed. The neighbors noticed the teens standing in Katie’s driveway, but never spoke with them.

Although it’s been more than a year since Katie turned the black-eyed children from her door, she knows they’re still around.

“I still see them every now and then standing across the street watching,” she said. “But they have not approached again.”

It's creepy alright. These stories don't go back that far, do they? It's odd that they should crop up over the last decade. The "must be invited in" line resonates with vampire stories and possession, though.

I hope this is the subject of your next book.

And also -- it can't have been over a year since it happened if December '08 is accurate.

Author said...

Why couldn't they be Emo/Scene kids with contact lenses like Marilyn Manson? They didn't levitate, no cold patches, they didn't even walk through walls.

That they wouldn't come in w/o an invitation just means they didn't want to break the law.

dbd said...

Your theory does not explain the extreme fear witnesses report. What have you got for that?

Author said...

She's a flighty person. Don't you know people who are naturally nervous?

BTW you can buy black lenses online. Google it, you can find them for $100 bucks and less.

It is possible that only one had the lenses on and she assumed the other one had them too. If she was a nervous person she'd be avoiding eye contact anyway.

I agree with the other poster. Get a photo. If they're still hanging around, get a photo.

dbd said...

Author, this isn't the only, nor the first report of this phenomenon. You seem to be talking about things you don't know very well here.

As for a photo, you'd not be convinced by one. Go to this page and see for yourself:

http://tinwiki.org/wiki/Black_Eyed_Kids

Seems its pretty easy to make such a photo. Anyway, while you are there, you can read about the phenomenon.

When one person tells a remarkable story, that's one thing. When a number of people tell the same story, that requires a little more investigation.

Author said...

I do agree, but I'm only commenting on the above case. How is THIS case paranormal.

BTW when a bunch of people tell the same story it's called a MYTH. Stories are just stories. When was the last time you saw a Unicorn?

dbd said...

I have never seen a unicorn. But I have seen a ghost, my cousins saw a UFO land in the field behind their house, and a guy standing right in front of me saw a bigfoot. Had I turned around a split second sooner, I'd have seen it too, but I heard it enough. As loud as an elephant for a few seconds, then dead quiet.

The world is what we experience, so I grant such things are probably impossible to you now. Yet, have just one experience that others tell you is impossible, and you'll stop taking their word for it.

In the case of myth, and the underlying story here may very well be a myth, the myth tells us something. What is this myth telling us? The children range in age from 12 to 17 or so, and can be either male or female. They are always much more in command of the situation than a child would ordinarily be -- they talk like adults, in other words, in diction and manner, and sometimes with strange diction even for adults. What could this myth be saying? That our children are evil? That they are unnaturally mature before their time?

I'm willing to listen to good interpretations on the level of myth, but I haven't found one that satisfies me yet.

The stories are weird. Unlike other stories of this type, they descend from a guy you can name and who, because he's a reporter, is trained to observe things. It's very easy to turn away from such things if they don't suit your world view, but we are not talking about unicorns here.

"The boys had lurked around her neighborhood for months,"

But she never once considered calling the police to report suspicious loitering?

MnDoc said...

I do have to wonder why theres no mention of police being called; that raises some questions about veracity. Otherwise this sounds a lot like a MIB story (complete with the asking for water and the "request" to enter).

Author said...

I saw that you run a Bigfoot Blog. Do you honestly think scientists or any reasonable person would believe that such a creature exists without proof? Proper hair samples, dung, photographs, tissue samples, etc. would all be needed before such a thing can be counted as fact.

You say you saw a ghost. Fine. What are the details. I can't believe you w/o details.

Your friends saw a UFO land in a field. Did they go to the landing site and take photos?

A person in front of you said he saw a BF. This is too laughable. He could have seen a bear. Where is the proof? All you heard was a noise.

All of the above equals NOTHING. So a reporter wrote a spooky story. Many people wrote about the Cardiff Giant too, and Piltdown man, and NEWS FLASH...people can lie. Lie or be gravely mistaken by their own faulty perceptions. Many people swear they saw Elvis after he died too.

There is nothing to this tale to show that it is true. It's a cool story but that's it. Do you just believe what anyone tells you? OK fine. I'm writing to you from the planet Rebafax. My wife is the Loch Ness Monster and I looooove Meatloaf.

Author, I hope you will pardon me if I don’t feel motivated to provide you with what you are asking for. The thing is, I’ve seen it all before, and it becomes harder each time to take up the banner and charge into the breach again.

I‘m always struck that so much energy is put into denying the experience of others by people who, it would seem by their own statements and generally woeful state of knowledge, have very little interest in the subject at hand. I like arguments and take a special interest in logical fallacy. I don’t like NASCAR racing, and I can’t imagine spending any of my time arguing about it on forums devoted to the subject, though I can imagine, having thought about it, that all kinds of errors of thinking run rampant there. Yet, whenever one of these paranormal subjects comes up, there is always the hardened pseudo-skeptic ever ready to pick up the bellows and work the flames until so much smoke fills the halls no one can see anything.

I know what I experienced, and I also know that you do not know. Further, I know that you don’t care about knowing, because if you did, you’d become minimally conversant about the subject before you waded into it. It appears to me, at any rate, that the one thing pseudo-skeptics such as yourself do care about is defending themselves from the thoughts that naturally arise when it appears the world might be different than they supposed. I hope and trust you’ll all be able to work that out for yourselves.

Author said...

Well, the horse is about dead so I'll make one last remark. All I ask for are facts that can be corroborated. By your standards "Let the Right One In" is a true story.

Without using your critical mind you are going to end up some day spending thousands of dollars on a frozen BigFoot Costume.

If you were spending your money on something, you'd want to make sure you got what you paid for right? Say you want to buy a cellphone. The maker claims you can use it to talk to the dead. Many other people swear that it works. You've never seen it function in person though. Would you spend your money on it? Wouldn't you want to test it out? If you heard an old rustic voice on the other end claiming to be Lincoln, wouldn't you ask for information that only Lincoln would know and you could verify?

If your answer is no, then you miss the point about critical thinking. It's not closed minded to want to see claims backed up with verifiable facts. The antithesis to this would be to just fall for every story you hear - even if they contradict. Such a foundation is built on sand. Unable to stand up to anything.

I hope you're not a contractor.

Jason, have you ever noticed there's two different kinds of anger?

There's the more usual, hot-blooded kind, where people hoof their cat over the moon, or batter the hood of their car - Basil Fawlty style - with a leafy branch torn from a bush.

But there's also a much rarer, much more chilling kind where, far from losing control, the people concerned suddenly seem to become far more intensely focused than you've ever known them be before, giving off this actually really rather scary aura of cold-blooded, almost lizard-like menace.

What I've always noticed about such people at such times is their eyes become totally black. I don't mean just the pupil - I mean the whole eyeball becomes impenetrably pitch black, like iridescent, densely black glass.

And I personally've also always had the undeniable sense each time this's happened I was no longer dealing with one of my parents, one of my siblings, one of my friends - the mother of my children! - but the same basic critter trying to intimidate me into averting my gaze away from the blackness of its eyes.

And I strongly suspect most, if not all of us've at one time or another found ourselves confronted by this 'thing' - whatever it is - but've chosen to disregard the evidence of our eyes.

Worse - in my case, at least - I very rarely losely my temper but, on doing so, go absolutely atomic, only to be told afterwards by people I trust, my eyes too became pitch black; and what's worrying is, on the few occasions this's occurred, I've not only felt exhiliratingly powerful, but I've wanted to stay that way!

I have to say that I do find this account a bit off and not a bit paranormal, despite that fact that it makes for a good "spooky" story. Obviously, most anyone walking up to their home in the middle of the night and encounters to males dressed all in black standing in their driveway wanting to come into their home with them are going to have a feeling of fear, especially if this is activity that it outside the norm. It also does not make any sense that this woman would not call for law enforcement assistance right away. And then her boyfriend arrives, see two strange kids standing in the driveway dressed like criminals and he is just like "oh, some hoodlums at my house" and then just carries on like nothing is wrong? This, when you step back and look at the facts, is certainly a 2 + 2 = 5 case (It doesn't add up). Good story though.

Author said...

Yes, sorry if there was any confusion on that point. I didn't mean to mislead anyone. Please don't flame Jason for any of my comments.

Thanks.

Does it EVER occur to theese people to carry a camera? I mean come on...this is hear-say. No real evidence to support this claim. Most of this paranormal stuff is just someone with WAY too much time on their hands.

Creepy story, but that's all it is - a story.

Even WITH photos, it'd only prove they're just teenage punks with contact lenses trying to freak out some lady.

There's nothing paranormal here....as usual.

does it really make sense that katie would allow fightening strangers trying to get into her house to linger and trespass for months without calling the cops? no...and as judge judy says, if it doesn't make sense it isn't true.
ripping yarn though

I've heard these stories about the black eyed kids before, and I think there needs to be more investigation into the witnesses. Are they typically paranoid? Have they had any paranormal experiences in the past? Is the interaction with the black eyed kids an isolated incident?

I open minded to possibility of black eyed kids being something paranormal, but so far, I'm pretty unconvinced. It seems more likely that they are just emo/goth kids looking for a stupid way to entertain themselves. The negative feelings associated with them may just be paranoia on the part of the witness. If I were to see someone with solid black eyes, it would probably startle me just because it would be unusual. These stories would probably cross my mind, but ultimately I wouldn't be afraid of them, and I would assume it was just a couple of stupid kids wearing contacts. As someone else mentioned, only being able to come inside somewhere if they are invited sounds like something from vampire mythology. Pretending to be vampires is popular with goths, so its not surpising they would utilize that element of vampire mythology in having their "fun". I'm also kind of surprised no one has ever bothered to ask the kids why their eyes are black, or jokingly say something like "nice eyes", just to see what they would say. I also wonder if anyone has ever found evidence on emo or goth forums online of kids talking about going out wearing black contacts and creeping people out?

Noakk said...

I've read about a lot of paranormal stories and I noticed that the Black Eyed People stories are usually the one that make the reader feel uncomfortable the most.

Having read every BEP story I could find online so far, I obviously believe that it's much more than "teenagers with black contacts". (It's not just children but also adults that were sighted with black eyes btw.)

The "victims" all describe experiencing a terror unlike any other they've ever experienced.
Most actually feared for their life - which would seem absurd if they were only dealing with normal people wanting to enter their home/car etc.

As for photographs - there was one case where a man meets a BEP in an elevator (and later outside) but upon viewing the security cam later on, there's no other person besides himself in the elevator. So maybe taking a photogtaph would have the same effect?
(though this might confirm the skeptics belief further)

I was searching articles and blogs for some information on the paranormal, I do...or at least I thought, lol, I had a lot of experience with this...but I have never heard of B.E.K before. Very interesting! Some have mentioned the contact lenses, nothing explains the common thread that everyone experiences once they have this encounter. The overwhelming fear, fear of death, being uneasy...etc. There is something the body senses and picks up that serves as a warning.

All of Jason's stories sound like fiction. I am not a skeptic or debunker, but the lack of details, corroborating info etc makes all of what is written on this blog sound like utter BS.

Read John Keel or Jacques Vallee to understand the difference.

To me these stories are modern urban folklore and its hard to take them seriously when they are presented in a fictionalised style.

Worth writing a book on as there seems to be a lot of them out there.

does anyone think porn is the only business still thriving during the credit cruch? I think many folks seek refuge in buying and wanking porn during the crunch

The B.E.P.'s phenomenon is new to me.A wicked story for the campfire for sure!As for believing it, I am, as always, on the fence.Hoodlums using scare tactics seems to be the most plausible explanation, but I wasn't there, and I'm not calling anyone a liar.
Urban legends spread like wildfire now because of the internet, so the stories from all over the world about the black-eyes doesn't really impress me, but the descriptions of the "fear" does. Why?The eyes can be fitted with contact lenses, we all know that, but the energy that produces the fear, that can't be faked. Now if you opened the door to strangers that you thought were going to burgle or worse, there would definitely be a fear; instinctual. The fact that they ask to come in would confuse, adding to the fear. But the problem I have is that why would these beings think that they would be welcomed in, if their eyes were pitch black?I can tell you now, that if I went across town, wearing black contact lenses and knocked on somebody's door, and asked to come in, I would be really surprised if they did allow entry! So logically speaking, I would say that the only reasons that the Black eyes would be doing this is to a)Really freak the victim out as a prank, or b)They do it because they have to do it; they need to do it.
I hope it is just people playing pranks, because thinking about the alternative sends even more tingles up my spine.
